Movers Waterloo Health and Safety Policy
Movers Waterloo is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, clients, contractors, and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and relocation activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across our moving, packing, loading, transportation, and delivery services.
The objectives of this policy are to prevent injury, protect health, comply with relevant health and safety legislation, and promote a culture of continuous improvement in all aspects of workplace safety.
Management Responsibilities
The management team at Movers Waterloo accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance within the company. Management will provide appropriate resources, training, equipment, and supervision to ensure that health and safety standards are maintained and improved where necessary.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy in their areas of control, including planning work safely, conducting risk assessments, monitoring working practices, and taking prompt action to address unsafe conditions or behaviours. They must ensure that safety procedures are clearly communicated and consistently applied during all removals and related services.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must follow company procedures, use equipment correctly, attend required training, and report hazards, near misses, incidents, and unsafe practices without delay.
Employees must cooperate with management in achieving a safe workplace, refrain from interfering with safety equipment, and immediately report any defects in vehicles, lifting aids, protective gear, or premises used during moving operations.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Movers Waterloo will carry out suitable and proportionate risk assessments for all significant hazards associated with removals work. This includes the handling of heavy and awkward items, stair work, use of trolleys and lifting aids, vehicle movements, access to properties, loading bays, and storage areas.
Findings from risk assessments will be used to develop safe systems of work, method statements, and operational guidelines. These will be communicated to relevant staff and, where appropriate, to clients and contractors. Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in work processes, locations, equipment, or legal requirements.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a core part of removals work and presents a significant risk of injury when not managed properly. Movers Waterloo will minimise manual handling risks by planning moves carefully, using mechanical aids where possible, distributing loads appropriately, and assigning sufficient staff to tasks.
All team members involved in lifting and carrying will receive training in correct manual handling techniques, including posture, team lifting, assessment of load weight, and recognition of personal limitations. Staff are instructed not to lift or carry items they believe are unsafe or beyond their capability and to seek assistance or alternative solutions.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are essential to providing reliable moving services and must be operated safely at all times. Movers Waterloo will maintain all vehicles in a roadworthy condition, carry out regular inspections, and keep maintenance records up to date. Defects must be reported immediately and vehicles will not be used if they are unsafe.
Drivers must hold appropriate licences and follow all road safety regulations, including speed limits, loading restrictions, and rules regarding driving hours and rest breaks. Loads must be secured correctly to prevent movement during transportation, and access points must be kept clear for safe loading and unloading at all addresses.
Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
Movers Waterloo will provide suitable equipment for moving and protecting goods, such as trolleys, dollies, straps, blankets, and protective coverings. Equipment will be inspected regularly and replaced or repaired when defective.
Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear, and high visibility clothing will be provided. Employees are required to use protective equipment as instructed and to report any damage or loss immediately.
Client Premises and Public Safety
Our teams often work in and around client homes, offices, and shared spaces. Particular care will be taken to protect clients, visitors, and the general public from potential hazards arising from our activities.
Walkways, staircases, and entrances will be kept as clear as reasonably practicable during moves. Trip hazards such as loose packing materials and equipment will be controlled and managed. Where necessary, warning signs or temporary barriers will be used to mark work areas or restricted zones during loading and unloading.
Training, Information, and Supervision
Movers Waterloo recognises that effective training is essential for safe work. Employees will receive induction training on health and safety procedures, followed by role-specific training in manual handling, vehicle operation, use of equipment, and incident reporting.
Refresher training will be provided when required, and when new procedures, equipment, or types of work are introduced. Supervisors will ensure that new staff are adequately supervised until they are competent to work independently.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager. Movers Waterloo will investigate incidents to identify root causes and take corrective action to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures will be in place for fire, serious injury, vehicle incidents, and other foreseeable emergencies. Staff will be briefed on evacuation routes, assembly points, communication methods, and the location of first aid supplies. Where work is carried out on client premises, our teams will familiarise themselves with local emergency arrangements.
Health, Welfare, and Fitness for Work
Movers Waterloo recognises the importance of general health and fitness in demanding removals work. Employees are expected to present themselves fit for duty and must not work under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that may impair their ability to work safely.
Where health conditions or injuries may affect an employee’s ability to perform certain tasks, this will be discussed confidentially and suitable adjustments or alternative duties will be considered where reasonably practicable.
Monitoring, Review, and Continuous Improvement
This health and safety policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals or when significant changes occur in our operations, services, or legal requirements.
Movers Waterloo encourages feedback from employees and clients on health and safety matters. Suggestions for improvements will be considered by management as part of our commitment to continually enhancing the safety and quality of our moving services.
